Aquatic Shockwaves And Ancient Armor On MythBusters Season Finale

The season finale of MythBusters airs Wednesday, June 29 at 9:00 PM on Discovery. The channel sent us some info on this latest episode along with a few video sneak peeks. Here’s what you can expect to happen:

Adam and Jamie explore the physics and dangers of shockwaves in water and how to best avoid injury. The myth evolves from instructions given to Navy divers who may be in danger of experiencing a sub-aqua explosion. The primary tip is to float horizontally rather than tread water vertically. Could this small detail really make a death defying difference? The daring duo head to a favorite big boom location, Quarry Lake, to test highly explosive hijink.

Later, Kari, Tory and Grant tackle a mystery of ancient armor technology by testing the strength of a suit of paper armor. In their very own ancient armor Olympics, the trio put paper up against steel in a series of battleground scenarios. Against a barrage of arrows, a savage sword attack and even a cascade of musket fire, can their paper armor perform as well as steel?

The History of armor made from…paper?!

Adam and Jamie attempt to construct a tank that will hold 1300 gallons of water – can they do it without causing a major flood like last time?

Jamie & Adam + Quarry + myth busting = Awesome Explosions

Grylls And Gyllenhaal Vs Wild

Bear Grylls has never been shy about taking celebrities along on his survivalist outings and this time he’s got Jake Gyllenhaal along for the adventure. Here’s all the details from Discovery about the return of Man Vs Wild:

Bear Grylls has survived in some of the most dangerous places on Earth. From jungles to deserts and from Everest to Antarctica, he travels to places where you couldn’t last a day without the right survival skills. To kick off a run of all-new episodes of MAN VS WILD on Monday, July 11 from 9-10PM ET/PT, Bear brings along a companion — actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

MAN VS WILD will test how Gyllenhaal measures up to unpredictable and unforgiving Mother Nature. For two days, Bear and Jake embark on a survival experience neither will forget, to an Icelandic landscape dominated by mountains, huge glaciers and some of Europe’s most active volcanoes. Jake will have to go where Bear goes, eat whatever Bear eats, and on occasion even take the lead, if he’s going to cope with some of the worst conditions known to man. “For me, it’s all about discovery,” said Gyllenhaal.

Said Bear about the experience, “The wild is always very revealing -– not only physically but mentally. You’ve got to smile when it’s driving horizontal hail and be able to face your fears and just get on and do it — and on both of those accounts, Jake came up strong.”

Six new episodes of MAN VS WILD continue Mondays at 9PM ET/PT beginning July 11, with Bear’s adventures taking him to other remote parts of Iceland in blizzard conditions, New Zealand’s South and North Islands, and the Utah badlands. A special compilation episode will mix never-before-seen challenges and behind the scenes from the season.

Flat Tires And Fat Fish On The Next MythBusters

Airs Wednesday, June 8 at 9:00 PM on Discovery

In the all-new Wednesday episode of MYTHBUSTERS, Adam and Jamie imagine that they get a flat tire with no spare or person to help in sight. Their only solution would be to reinvent the wheel, quite literally. They get creative by using tree branches, hay and water bottles, but will their MacGyver-esque solutions work, or will they be stranded? Meanwhile, Grant, Tory and Kari take on a fishy situation. The story states that a fisherman in the Bahamas hooked the mother of all marlins; however, instead of being reeled in, it turned on its tail and swam fast to save its life. The tenacious fish swam so fast that the line on the fisherman’s reel spooled out at stupendous speed and the friction caused it to catch on fire, allowing the marlin to fight another day. In true MYTHBUSTERS fashion, the trio busts out a go-kart to put this fishy myth to the test.

What a Drag!
If a fish on your line swims fast enough, will your rod burst into flames? Tory, Grant and Kari investigate.

Wacky Jacky
Tory, Grant and Kari arrive at the Fisherman Wharf at the crack of dawn to put the flaming reel myth to the test.

Good Wood
You may see just a log, but Adam and Jamie see a tire – yep, a tire!

Hyneman Hazards
Jamie sets up some hazardous conditions to put Adam’s makeshift flat tire fix to the ultimate test.

The MythBusters Encounter “Bubble Trouble”

“BUBBLE TROUBLE” Airs Wednesday, April 27 at 9:00 PM on Discovery

Here is a myth that I can easily list as busted: MythBusters is boring. This year’s episodes have been pretty epic and this one looks like it will continue that trend. This is a show our entire family watches together. I’m especially pleased that my son and I can be as equally excited about each new episode and both giggle in the same way at the extremes that the guys will go to in order to make busted myths actually happen. Here’s what to look forward to on this week’s episode:

Jamie and Adam eagerly investigate the tall tale that it’s impossible for a person to stay afloat in bubbly water. To test this buoyancy challenge, the duo creates a giant homemade bubble machine which they place in a swimming pool, while Adam decides to play the role of a human barometer. Meanwhile, Kari, Tory and Grant examine whether or not an arrow packed with dynamite can truly split a tree in two, as performed on the television series MacGyver. They test this myth by shooting multiple arrows packed with explosives into a multitude of trees, including small Christmas trees and a 100-foot tall Ponderosa pine.

A Supposition Sunk: Do bubbles affect water density and buoyancy? A small-scale experiment with a fish tank, “crude” hydrometer and “Little Adam” leaves both Adam and Jamie surprised.

“Bubble Trouble” Outtakes: Clearly, from these deleted scenes, Tory is a Shining fan, and Adam loves mobster movies and … synchronized swimming.

A Dy-no-mite Plan: From tree (pine) to bow (remote) to payload (binary), Kari, Grant and Tory lay out their plan to take on the viewer myth of the Dynamite Axe.

Penn & Teller Reveal Secrets Of The Universe…Or Do They?

I’m not sure what this means for their popular Showtime series, but Discovery have announced a very cool new series from the duo Penn & Teller. Secrets of the Universe also invites the audience to determine if the two are lying. Here’s how it works: Each of the six episodes will feature up to 10 outrageous and mind-blowing stories, but one is a fabrication, an out and out lie! It will be up to Discovery’s intrepid, savvy, and conversant audience to discover the untruths aimed at them by Penn & Teller, the biggest brains in entertainment, as a new game of “Guess the Lie” begins in each episode.

Secrets of the Universe will premiere this fall on Discovery Channel.

“There’s a natural convergence between Penn & Teller’s performances and Secrets of the Universe,” said Clark Bunting, president and general manager, Discovery Channel. “It reflects their work with deception as magicians and debunkers in all other areas of their act, which makes it a one of a kind entertainment experience.”

“If there are two things Penn & Teller stand for, it’s the truth & lying, although not necessarily in that order; this show has both,” said Penn Jillette. “We have always been very pro-science and technology and it will be wonderful to be on the network we watch the most.”

In each episode, aided by a series of extraordinary visual stunts, Penn & Teller will reveal the most wondered Secrets of the Universe.

Unbelievable stories like:

* How were five people shot by their dogs since 1990?
* Can you lift a 5,000 pound car with a human hair?
* Did ancient aboriginal Australians create a cure for snoring?
* Can you land a plane if the rudders go out?
* What music causes alligators to have sex (clue #1 – it’s not Barry White!)?
* What happens to Teller when he’s lowered into a tank of piranhas?

And one of them won’t be true, as Discovery’s audience across multiple platforms decode which is the cock-and-bull story, and interact with the program to stop these wild anti-magicians in their tracks. Only at the end of each show will Penn & Teller’s lies be exposed.
