PCZ: What can you tell us about the eighth season?

Well, personally I’m just really excited about the season about being able to… we’ve kind of danced around it for a long time and since the show hinges so heavily on the Sam and Dean relationship it’s been difficult to go do Sam and do Dean and bring them back together. But now we’re going to see a lot more of Dean in Purgatory then we saw of Dean in hell and so because we’re going to be able to have a Dean story line for however long he was there – I think a year or something… I’ll have to ask our show runner, but we’re going to see a lot of what happened to Dean and what happened to Sam.

It was the first time in Sam’s life that he was able to, without feeling bad about it, walk away from the life. He wasn’t behind Castiel. He wasn’t behind Bobby. He wasn’t behind Dean. He didn’t know about Kevin. He kind of left Kevin for dead, but he assumed he was somewhere else. And he was finally like, “Okay, not my issue. I’m out, for real.” And he was able to for a long time. But now he’s sort of getting dragged back into it. Hopefully, also he’ll get some chances to also be back out of it.

PCZ: The last couple of years Sam’s story line has been so dark. Are things going to get a little more positive?

Yes, which is nice, since sometimes it gets so dark that it kind of affects you as a human being. “Oh, I’m getting depressed and I feel evil.” The demon blood season was kind of like empowering. It’s weird, but it really does affect you. Sam basically, from what I understand, approaches the beginning of the season with like this one last job. “Fine, but I was out. And I get it, you want one thing, but once I’m finished this, I’m done. I mean it. I walked away. I was happy. I want to walk away again. I’m happy you’re alive. I love you, brother, but I don’t want to hunt for the rest of my life.” Which is nice.

BEN EDLUND – SUPERNATURAL – PRESS ROOM COMIC CON 2012

PCZ: You’re always known for writing some of the cool shows each season. What are you planning for season eight?

I have a couple, but actually sadly… the thing I would tell you about it would be too close to the giveaway. I believe, if we get to it, that there is a way to do another permutation of The French Mistake actually. I didn’t think that was possible, but there is, if we wanted to do it there is one more stupid ass way to take that story and turn it again. Which is absurd, but I think it’s possible. And it would give the boys a whole different acting challenge which would be kind of cool.

PCZ: Last season was so serious. There really weren’t many fun episodes.

I think that’s true. I think it would be cool if we had a higher level of more absurdist toss away episodes. Oddly, I thought we would have more last year, because it seemed to me we were moving in the direction of a B movie premise with the monsters. I’d say that the monster last year were a wrestling match of things that worked and didn’t work. But I’d say mythologically speaking they set the ground for other things that I’m very pleased we’ve got working in our sort of grandfather clock…to sort of speak.
