BOOM! Studios Plus Samuel L. Jackson Equals ‘Cold Space’

After becoming the face of the Ultimate and film Nick Fury the next logical step would be for Samuel L. Jackson to create and write his own comic, right? Well, here it is, a new series from BOOM! Studios called COLD SPACE created and co-written by the man who has faced snakes and sith alike.

This April, BOOM! Studios teams up with legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson and Emmy nominated writer/producer Eric Calderon — the folks that brought you the Emmy award-winning AFRO SAMURAI — to deliver their next original comic book series, COLD SPACE. A hard-boiled sci-fi action-adventure with covers by Eisner Award-winner Dave Johnson and IRREDEEMABLE cover artist Jeffrey Spokes, COLD SPACE is sure to be the most talked-about comic of the spring.

COLD SPACE follows the adventures of an on-the-run outlaw as he crash-lands on a hostile planet that is on the brink of civil war. Finding himself in the crossfire between two warring factions, Mullbery realizes that in chaos lies opportunity — because where there’s war, there’s money to be made.

Samuel L. Jackson says, “I’m a long time comic reader and big fan of many genres in graphic novels and manga – from crime thrillers, westerns, & super-hero books, to samurai dramas, science fiction and horror. So I actually do read the stuff – and lots of it. Now’s my chance to put my stamp on the medium with something new, but with a classic taste of the stuff I already like.”

“It’s my honor to continue my creative relationship with Samuel L. Jackson and to work with the passionate people at BOOM! Studios,” said COLD SPACE co-writer Eric Calderon. “I hope everyone will dig the excellent covers by Dave Johnson, Jeffrey Spokes and the tight interior line work by Mr. Jeremy Rock.”

“C’mon, who are we kidding, this is a fanboy dream! Don’t pinch me, I don’t wanna wake up!” said BOOM! Chief Executive Officer Ross Richie. “This is going to be a straight-up blast!”

COLD SPACE is a four-issue miniseries written by Samuel L. Jackson and Eric Calderon with interior art by the sensational Jeremy Rock. The first issue features two covers in a 50/50 split, with art by Dave Johnson and Jeffrey Spokes, a 1-in-10 incentive cover and carries a Diamond Code of FEB100744. Each issue will retail for $3.99.

Samuel L. Jackson IS Nick Fury…Accept No Substitutes

Finally, we can all rest easy. According to Variety, Samuel L. Jackson has signed a long-term deal with Marvel Studios to play the part of Nick Fury for the next several years. Jackson first appeared as the character in a scene after the end credits of 2008’s Iron Man. This new deal will see him don the eyepatch for Iron Man 2 and at least eight other films, presumably, at least, The First Avenger: Captain America, Thor, Avengers and now also a S.H.I.E.L.D. film and the possible sequels. If that last one happens, who’s gonna play Dum-Dum Duggan? Let the speculation begin. I’m betting on Rip Taylor as he looks the part. The deal with Jackson is welcome news indeed as there has been some doubt about whether or not Marvel was interested in keeping him in the role. Honestly, after the Ultimates comic book series, I just can’t see anyone else playing the part. Sound off below on what you think of this news.

The upcoming Afro Samurai video game (Namco Bandai) will feature the same story from the original series.  A trailer was shown and the game is as beautiful as it is bloody.  It will feature voice acting from Samuel L.
