Andy Whitfield Loses Battle Against Lymphoma

Over the weekend we learned the sad and shocking news that Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma at age 39. Season two of the hit STARZ series was delayed in order to allow the actor to battle the disease and he appeared at San Diego Comic-Con in 2010 healthy and ready to resume his duties. Unfortunately, he had a relapse shortly thereafter and was forced to leave the show permanently, but was positive about successfully recovering. Then Sunday we received the sad word that Andy succumbed to the horrible disease. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Andy’s family and friends. Today, STARZ issued the following concerning the talented actor:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield,” said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. “We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in ‘Spartacus’ and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.”
