A Look At Jeffrey Dean Morgan And The Cast Of Magic City

Imagine Miami Beach on New Year’s Eve, 1958. Ike Evans celebrates at his luxurious Miramar Playa Hotel. It’s a tumultuous time in Miami and abroad as racial and religious segregation are at their pinnacle in the U.S., while 90 miles away in Cuba, Castro’s rebels are closing in on Havana. Regardless, Miami is still THE place to be and the Miramar Playa is its coveted epicenter. The Kennedys, the mob and the CIA all hold court here and Ike, the man with the dream, is the star. But everything comes at a price. STARZ’s newest Original drama series, “Magic City,” will debut on Friday, April 6 at 10 pm ET/PT, exclusively on STARZ.

This alluring new STARZ Original drama stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen, “Grey’s Anatomy,” Dibbuk Box), Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace, Max Payne) and Danny Huston (The Kingdom, Children of Men, X-Men Origins: Wolverine). They star alongside an ensemble cast including Steven Strait (City Island), Christian Cooke (Cemetery Junction), Jessica Marais (“Packed to the Rafters”), Yul Vazquez (The A-Team, American Gangster), Dominik Garcia-Lorido (City Island), Kelly Lynch (Drugstore Cowboy, Charlie’s Angels) and Elle Satine (Just Go With It).

The “Magic City” story continues into the new year of 1959 as Ike Evans (Morgan) conjures ways to finance his dream. He has essentially sold his soul to the devil, mob boss Ben “The Butcher” Diamond (Huston). Ike’s wife Vera (Kurylenko), a former showgirl, and his three children think he is an honorable man, but he just can’t break his pact with the most dangerous criminal in town. His life is a fa

STARZ Gives Early Renewal To Spartacus

The second season of Spartacus, subtitled Vengeance, doesn’t start airing for another couple of months, but that hasn’t stopped STARZ from greenlighting a third season. The channel has shown an amazing amount of faith and confidence is this series so I think the only surprising thing is that they renewed it for only one season. Here are all the details from today’s press release from STARZ:

The most celebrated STARZ Originals franchise, Spartacus, will continue to wow audiences worldwide with a renewal secured for a thrilling and bloody third season. The green light comes well in advance of Spartacus: Vengeance, which will debut exclusively on STARZ – Friday, January 27, 2012 at 10PM ET/PT. As yet untitled, production on the third season of Spartacus is expected to begin in New Zealand in early 2012.

Starz Media Managing Director Carmi Zlotnik commented, “There is no denying the impact Spartacus has had in the marketplace with fans across the globe thirsting for the continuation of the epic tale. Vengeance brings unparalleled action and drama to STARZ viewers in January. We are thrilled to come to an early agreement that allows the writers and talent to get right back to work in preparing for season three.”

“Many surprises are in store for Vengeance viewers this year, but rest assured the multi-layered plot and richly developed characters will continue to be a trademark of this series,” said Rob Tapert, executive producer. “It’s incredibly gratifying to see how the story has resonated so well with viewers worldwide.”

“The executives at Starz have been extremely supportive in giving us creative freedom and allowing us to tell the story in a rich, yet bold way that leaves an indelible mark on its fans,” added Steven S. DeKnight, executive producer.
The most recent chapter of Spartacus was the prequel, Gods of the Arena, which ran in January 2011 and averaged an estimated 6.2 million total viewers per episode across all linear channels and on-demand viewing.
Australian actor Liam McIntyre (Ektopos, Radev, Neighbours, The Pacific) assumes the title role of Spartacus in Vengeance. McIntyre is joined by returning favorites: Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess, Battlestar Galactica) as Lucretia; Peter Mensah (Avatar, 300, The Incredible Hulk) as Oenomaus – once known as Doctore; Manu Bennett (The Marine, 30 Days of Night), as Crixus; Dustin Clare (Underbelly, Satisfaction) as Gannicus; Nick E. Tarabay (Crash, CSI: Miami) as Ashur; and Katrina Law (Third Watch) as Mira.

Season two also brings the return of Blood and Sand cast members, Craig Parker (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) as Gaius Claudius Glaber, the Roman commander who condemned Spartacus to slavery, and his alluring and cunning wife Ilithyia played by Viva Bianca (Accidents Happen) . Actress Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Dirt) joins the series as Naevia, the former body slave to Lucretia who was banished from the Ludus for engaging in a love affair with Crixus.

David Goyer Reveals Da Vinci’s Demons For STARZ

I’ve been a big fan of David Goyer since Dark City so this comes as great news! I think he does his best work when he’s writing his own stuff which leaves me very interested in seeing what he comes up with for this new series. Here are all the pertinent details from today’s STARZ press release:

Starz Entertainment has green-lit a new original adventure series titled Da Vinci’s Demons, developed and produced by BBC Worldwide Productions. This is the first project to enter production under the multi-year agreement Starz signed with BBC Worldwide Productions earlier this summer.

The series was jointly announced today by Starz Media Managing Director, Carmi Zlotnik and BBC Worldwide Productions Head, Jane Tranter.

Written by David S. Goyer, co-writer of blockbuster and critically-acclaimed films Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and writer of the highly anticipated Man of Steel, the eight-episode series is scheduled to begin production in early-2012.

Da Vinci’s Demons is David Goyer’s historical fantasy, following the “untold” story of the world’s greatest genius during his raucous youth in Renaissance Florence. Brash and brilliant, the twenty five-year old da Vinci is an artist, inventor, swordsman, lover, dreamer and idealist. As a free thinker, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time. He begins to not only see the future, but invent it.

David Goyer commented, “Da Vinci was the original Renaissance man — a near-mythic figure that has world-wide appeal. After working with characters like Batman and Superman, it made a strange kind of sense for me to dive into the facts and legends swirling around his origins. This will be a show about secret histories, genius, madness, and all things profane. And I’m particularly excited that I get to do it on premium cable, where the story can be as dark and challenging and irreverent as it deserves to be. Starz and BBC Worldwide Productions have been nothing but supportive.”

Zlotnik said, “David has reimagined some of the most iconic superheroes of all time, and is again building an extraordinary prism through which to rediscover the world’s greatest genius and most mysterious man. If modern day has Tony Stark, the Renaissance had da Vinci. This is a story we believe will captivate the imaginations of audiences around the world and is the first of what we expect to be many productions with our talented partners at BBC Worldwide Productions.”

Jane Tranter, Head of BBC Worldwide Productions, said, “The young life of this incredibly complex and brilliant man has not yet been explored. With David Goyer, whose imagination has created juggernaut and iconic theatrical features, coupled with the premium presence of Chris Albrecht, Carmi Zlotnik and their Starz team, we couldn’t be more passionate about bringing this story to U.S. viewers and international audiences.”

Starz is expected to air the worldwide broadcast premiere in 2013. BBC Worldwide will distribute the series internationally. David S. Goyer is showrunner. Julie Gardner will serve as Executive Producer, along with BBC Worldwide Productions’ Head Jane Tranter.

Da Vinci’s Demons is the latest piece of distinguished, exclusive original programming announced from Starz. Boss, starring Kelsey Grammer and produced by Lionsgate debuted on October 21. Spartacus: Vengeance, season two of the breakout worldwide hit, returns in January 2012 and the much-anticipated Magic City, debuts in April 2012.

BBC Worldwide Productions started its scripted efforts when Jane Tranter, former Controller of BBC Fiction, arrived to run the company in January 2009. Shortly thereafter Julie Gardner, former Head of Drama, BBC Wales, joined as SVP, Scripted, BBC Worldwide Productions. Tranter and Gardner have been responsible for a plethora of titles in their careers including Doctor Who, Torchwood, Little Dorrit, Bleak House, Girl in a Café, Ashes to Ashes and State of Play. Torchwood: Miracle Day was the first scripted series produced by BBC Worldwide Productions, recently wrapped its run on Starz. The company has over 20 scripted projects in sold development with various cable and network partners as well as 10 unscripted series currently in production.

Steven S. DeKnight Signs Exclusive Deal With STARZ

STARZ has signed Spartacus Co-Creator, Executive Producer and Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight to an exclusive two-year overall deal. Starz has a three-year relationship with DeKnight, since the 2009 launch of the critically-acclaimed hit action drama series Spartacus.

“Steven is a rare talent who we want to stay in business with,” says Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director of Starz. “We are thrilled this incredible creative partnership will continue for years to come.”

“The creative support and unparalleled freedom that Chris Albrecht, Carmi Zlotnik, Marta Fernandez and the entire Starz team have given me has been deeply appreciated,” says DeKnight. “It is a rare, wonderful opportunity to collaborate with an emerging network on forging their identity in scripted programming. I look forward to continuing this incredibly rewarding relationship. I would also like to thank my producing partners on Spartacus, Rob Tapert, Joshua Donen, and Sam Raimi, for placing their trust in an unproven showrunner. Without them and the tireless efforts of my agents Chris Harbert and Tom Young at CAA, none of this phenomenal good fortune would have been possible.”

DeKnight will continue to serve in his current role on Spartacus which will premiere its second season in January 2012.
