Review: Doctor Who – A Christmas Carol On Blu-Ray

It’s Christmas Eve and the Doctor’s companions, Amy and Rory find their honeymoon interrupted as the space liner they are on is headed for a fiery crash on the planet below. The Doctor discovers that one man, Kazran Sardick has the power to save the ship and all 4003 passengers on board. The trouble is, Sardick is an old miser with nothing but contempt for his fellow man. Normally, it would be very dangerous to be between the Doctor and lives that need saving, but this time the Time Lord decides to remake Sardick a better man by visiting his younger self and showing him a ore compassionate way of life. With time running out for the starship, the Doctor shows the miser a lifetime of Christmases full of joy, love, sharks swimming in fog and Marilyn Munroe. It’s a Doctor Who Christmas to all, and to all a great episode.

The BBC and 2 Entertain bring this wonderful adventure to your home in a stunning 1080i HD picture with DTS 5.1 surround sound. Quit simply, the video and sound are stunning. Add to that one of the best Doctor Who scripts ever from Steven Moffat and brilliant performances from Matt Smith and guest-stars Michael Gambon, Katherine Jenkins and Danny Horn and you have a Doctor Who episode that you don’t need the excuse of the holidays to watch over and over again.

Extras include a Doctor Who Confidential about this episode and Doctor Who at The Proms 2010. The Confidential provides some great insight and behind the scenes looks and is narrated by Being Human‘s Russell Tovey. Incidentally, Tovey has appeared twice on Doctor Who, chiefly in the 2007 Christmas Special, “Voyage of the Damned,” and then again briefly in final David Tennant episode “The End of Time, Part II.”

Doctor Who at The Proms 2010 shows the night of Murray Gold’s Doctor Who music at last year’s The Proms week at Royal Albert Hall. On hand were Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and a host of the Doctor’s greatest enemies. It’s a great presentation and the feature really makes you feel as if you are there at the actual presentation. The Proms is a great way to celebrate Gold’s wonderful music.
