The latest Bond and a sad knockoff Bond square off. Not unlike the classic face-off between Never Say Never Again and Octopussy in 1983, especially since Connery will lose again.
Pick of the Week
Quantum of Solace
Bond Returns with a bang and a set of Behind the Scenes features (Unless you buy the Single Disc edition which only comes with the Jack White/Alicia Keys music video). I missed this in the theatre so I will be quick to snatch this DVD up. PCZ took a look at this disc and here are our thoughts.
Bolt
Disney’s newest hit drops with a nice two-disc edition full of behind the scenes features and a digital copy. I always find the voice over process fascinating and there are features covering all the key actors’ (John Travolta, Miley Cyrus, Susie Essman, James Lipton) voice work although you get a lot of Miley Cyrus, which may be a great thing for some and a shame for others. This also continues the Disney trend of including a standard DVD with the Blu-Ray. Read the PCZ review of this disc right here.
Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter & Under the Hood
The story within the story of the Watchmen gets released in animated form with the voice of Gerard Butler (300). The DVD also comes with “Under the Hood”, a live action CGI tale featuring the stars of the movie. There is a featurette that covers how the two connect to and expand the universe of the film, and if you buy the Blu-Ray you get a digital copy.
TV and Reissues
The Venture Bros.: Season Three
The third season drops in uncensored form with Audio commentaries. But the best feature is the Box design which is styled after an Atari 2600 game. This also marks the first Adult Swim show to be released in HD on Blu-Ray which also comes with a soundtrack CD.
Andy Richter Controls the Universe: The Complete Series
Whenever Andy Richter gets a show it is usually funny and then canceled. This set includes all the filmed episodes (nineteen) from its two short midseason runs. They also put together two silly featurettes for the release
Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird – 25th Anniversary Edition
The muppet classic gets a special edition which isn’t terribly special. You get an interview with Carroll Spinney, who plays Big Bird, and a “Sing-Along” feature, and if you hook it up to a computer you can download coloring book pictures. The real question is how Elmo showed up on the cover of the movie when he was in the film for around two seconds.
To Catch a Thief – The Centennial Collection
The Hitchcock classic gets a few new features including a Historian Commentary and a feature on the battles over Censorship in the film industry at the time.
The Odd Couple – The Centennial Collection
The classic comedy gets a wonderful cleanup with a ton of new features. Most of the features are on the chemistry established between the stars Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau, and their families even provide the commentary track.
The Fast and the Furious Trilogy
Each film from the series (The Fast & The Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious and The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift) gets a two disc edition with all the previously produced features and a few new ones to promote the newest installment coming to the theatres. Each comes with a Digital copy as well.
Never Say Never Again
Once again going head to head with the real Bond this crappy excuse for a Bond film gets a special edition which may be worth a look just to hear how they defend it on the commentary. I would be more interested in the fan edit that takes this Thunderball remake and adds in the official Bond music and gives it a decent opening credit sequence. You can find it on Bit Torrent called “Never Say McClory Again”, after Kevin McClory who owns the rights to Thunderball only and wanted to make more money off the title.
