DVDs With Dean – The Final DVDs Of 2009

This Week’s Tastiest Morsel
Paranormal Activity
This was my second favorite Horror movie of the year after Let The Right One In and while I am disappointed that the only special feature is the alternate ending which I saw already on youtube, it still gets the top spot to close out the year. If you are a rabid fan, check out the Collector’s Edition which includes a shirt that is probably too small. And if you think buying a low budget film on Blu-ray is worthwhile you will be rewarded with a digital copy to scare you on-the-go.

Fresh Catches
9
Fans of Tim Burton and Coraline and other dark animated material should love this original tale of 9 hand made creatures who are given life before an apocalyptic event. They now have to band together to survive a ravaged world of oddities and machines. Thankfully, everyone gets all the features regardless of format.

Glee, Vol. One: Road to Sectionals
This is the first thirteen episodes of the hot new hit featuring scene stealer extraordinaire Jane Lynch. The set includes all the musical performances, many of the cast’s audition tapes, and a director’s cut of the Pilot. I haven’t found my way to seeing the show yet but I intend to catch up on DVD.

Jennifer’s Body
Diablo Cody decided to follow up her Juno success with a strange horror movie starring Megan Fox and a huge step down at director in Karyn Kusama (Aeon Flux). If you get the movie on Blu-ray it comes with a few features featuring the popular writer, but standard DVD purchasers only get the audio commentary.

United States of Tara: Season One
Diablo Cody’s second love is this multiple personality dramedy starring Toni Collette that she helped create. While the show is getting great buzz and awards they priced the too short season too high. Rent it on Netflix.

A Perfect Getaway (Theatrical/Unrated Director’s Cut)
Milla Jovovich doesn’t seem to be getting older, but while her looks stay the same her taste in formulaic films seems to stay as well. This time she is on an island vacation that goes wrong in a murderous way with Steve Zhan.

Weather Girl
A quirky romantic comedy that only shows up on my radar because it features Kaitlin Olsen from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Purely a rental.

Facing Ali
This documentary features classic fight footage and interviews with many of Muhammad Ali foes over the years including Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Larry Holmes.
