DVDs With Dean – Release Date July 7th

A wonderful Peanuts collection and other TV releases makes this week shine with no help from a dreadful lot of New Releases.

Pick of the Week
Peanuts: 1960’s Collection (A Charlie Brown Christmas / Charlie Brown’s All-Stars / It’s the Great Pumpkin / You’re in Love / He’s Your Dog / It Was a Short Summer)
All the 1960’s movie’s in one set with a bonus featurette on Vince Guaraldi who composed the iconic music including “Linus and Lucy”. This has a great price point at twenty bucks especially since it holds such great nostalgia value.

Push
I wasn’t able to dig up much on the DVD release for this supernatural action film, but the UK version has a commentary featuring Chris Evans (Fantastic Four) and Dakota Fanning (Man on Fire) which may be interesting especially if Dakota is as smart and condescending as portrayed by Amy Poehler on SNL.

Knowing
A boy opens up a fifty year old Time Capsule and finds a bunch of Nostradamus type predictions of Doom…which begin to come true…ugh. I am really beginning to wonder about Nicolas Cage. I think he needs to release a movie like Adaptation again to shake off all the sub-par action films he has made lately. However, this movie is supposed to feature a stunning plane crash sequence.

The Unborn
Apparently, the Unrated version of the film is only one minute longer, so I wouldn’t put a lot of stock in it elevating the film beyond it’s PG-13 theatrical run. You can spend the minute pondering why Gary Oldman is in this cliché horror film. The DVD is also bare bones.

Night Train
This movie sounds like an episode of The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits, where a set of three strangers discover a dead body on a Night Train and begin to fight over a mysterious box found on the man’s body.

TV and Reissues
Mystery Science Theater 3000: XV
The last collection went out of print and became freakishly rare very quickly so you have been warned. This collection includes The Robot Vs. The Aztec Mummy, The Girl In Lovers Lane, Zombie Nightmare and Racket Girls.

Kath & Kim – Season One
This should have been marked as Kath and Kim the complete series because it was not picked up for a second season.

Reno 911!: The Complete Sixth Season
The best show on Comedy Central (yes better than South Park) and if you are a fan of alternative comedy you will see multiple cameos in most episodes from Patton Oswalt to Nick Swardson.

Near Dark
This is a cult vampire film that is largely under-appreciated from Katheryn Bigelow who went on to direct Point Break and the hyped upcoming film The Hurt Locker.

John Barrymore Collection (Sherlock Holmes / Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde / The Beloved Rogue / Tempest)
This is another classic film collection that would be a worthy addition to anyone’s library.
