DVDs With Dean – Release Date July 21st

Watchmen and Coraline both hit DVD shelves this week, finally delivering a blockbuster week for DVD fans.

Pick of the Week
Watchmen (Director’s Cut) (Two-Disc Special Edition + Amazon Digital Bundle + Digital Copy)
The highly ambitious Watchmen finally arrives on DVD and is even longer at 186 minutes (an extra 25 minutes) with several more scenes from the comic and even a few more or extended fight sequences. I look forward to watching this film with the additional content but I am wary about this DVD release because it is light on features especially for a cult film, which makes me think that another special edition is coming on the horizon. If you land on this edition it comes with a feature on the Alan Moore classic novel and some promotional webisodes as well as a Digital copy. You Blu-Ray people should take a look at the Amazon Exclusive Blu-ray Edition in a collectible Night Owl Ship case.

Coraline (Two-Disc Collector’s Edition w/ 3D) (also available Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
The much praised stop-motion animation film from the director of The Nightmare before Christmas comes in both 2 and 3-D with four sets of 3-D glasses. The two-disc edition comes with a “making of” chronicling the stop-motion process and another feature on the celebrity voice cast’s recording sessions. The Blu-Ray edition comes with a few more token features including one on the adaptation from the Neil Gaiman book.

Prison Break: The Final Break
The final chapter on the Prison Break show comes out as a feature length DVD cleaning up some of the remaining drama left over from the last season finale. The DVD appears to be bare bones.

The Great Buck Howard
Tom Hanks co-stars and produced this comedy following an aging mentalist played by John Malkovich who was once a late night favorite (think of The Amazing Kreskin) who is trying to regain some of his old fame. Hanks called in some big supporting actors including Steve Zahn, Emily Blunt, and Colin Hanks.

TV and Reissues
Monk: Season Seven
The show powers on consistently adding Emmy’s to Tony Shaloub’s mantle. This season is largely featureless besides a few commentaries from the writing staff.

Psych: The Complete Third Season
Unlike their more popular brother show Monk mentioned above, Psych comes with a bunch of features including goofy gag reels and montages and a litany of commentaries including some video commentaries.

Pushing Daisies: The Complete Second Season
Sadly, the show won’t be coming back for a third season so we have to savor the last thirteen episodes and the few features they put together until another whimsical show comes along. However, that may not happen since this show failed to gain an audience.

Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods
The pilot to the cult Sci-Fi hit has been recut with enhanced special effects for their die-hard fans to enjoy. The DVD also includes a Commentary and a featurette on the revisiting effort.

Robot Chicken: Star Wars – Episode II
This contains the original 22 minute episode with an additional 38 minutes of content to form a full hour of ridiculous Star Wars sketch comedy. The disc also has 90+ minutes of special features including a video Commentary and some behind the scenes coverage.
