The long lost Fanboys finally hits the shelves after years in production hell, and I don’t know if I am more excited by the idea of the minky Kristen Bell in the Princess Leia slave outfit, Tom Cruise in an eyepatch, or Kevin James on a Segway. O.K it’s not really a fair contest.
Pick of the Week
Brotherhood of the Wolf – Director’s Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
This French film is a classic that didn’t catch on in the U.S. I had to fight to get a sweet three-disc import from Canada a few years back to get access to the features you can get here for twelve bucks from Amazon. The film balances a horror mystery with stunning action with France’s best acting talent including Vincent Cassel (Eastern Promises), Monica Belluci (Shoot ‘Em Up), Samuel Le Bihan, and Mark Dacascos, who found his way into a decent film despite his sketchy history (Double Dragon).
Valkyrie (Two-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy)
Continuing a long standing tradition of having British and American actors play Nazis, Tom Cruise and Kenneth Branagh star in this story of the failed assassination attempt on Hitler by his own men. The DVD comes with two features and two commentaries although the Blu-ray is loaded with extras the standard doesn’t come with. Joe’s review of the theatrical release is here and he will also be taking a look at the DVD later this week.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop
Kevin James is making the transition from TV (King of Queens) to film look easy. He played an excellent second fiddle in Hitch and I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry and now has proven he can headline a movie all the way to the bank. The DVD is packed with silly features and James contributes to most of them including the commentary.
Fanboys
After languishing in a post-production limbo for years people began to wonder if this film would ever be available. Now that Star Wars – Episode I is ten years old, I wonder if they waited too long to release a film about a group of teenagers trying to sneak their dying buddy into Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch to see Episode I before its release (and his death).
My Bloody Valentine 3D
It’s a little gimmicky with the 3D as evidenced by the pick-ax which is ideal for jumping off the screen into your face, but if you like typical “slasher” horror this is a safe bet.
Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus
Check out the trailer below for this campy thrill ride starring Debbie Gibson that has a Megamouth Shark battling an Enormous Octopus and any human transport foolish enough to sail nearby or even *gulp* fly overhead.
[Editor’s Note: This may be the single greatest DVD ever. That is all.]
Outlander
A Sci-Fi action film that takes place in…Ancient Norway? Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ) stars as a man thrown back in time who tries to help the king fight the dragon creatures plaguing his kingdom. They hoped this would be a cult hit, but they didn’t spend any money to get it exposure. I’m curious enough to check it out. To get an idea of what you’re in for, check out Stephanie’s review of the theatrical release here.
Kobe Doin’ Work – A Spike Lee Joint
Fans of Kobe Bryant can see a night in his life from last year’s playoffs including his pre and postgame work. I just wonder why Spike Lee felt we needed this movie.
TV and Re-Issues
True Blood: The Complete First Season
HBO always has a show in the works it seems and they are hoping this Vampire drama will fill one of the voids left by Deadwood, The Wire, and The Sopranos. The reviews have been strong so far and it looks like they might be pricing this set reasonably, which has always been my criticism of HBO’s DVD sets.
24: Season Seven
This is another solid season for 24 which helps atone for the weaker sixth season. Although the return of Tony Almeida is a mixed bag of good and stupid.
The Guild Season One and Season Two (Amazon Exclusives)
Felicia Day (Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, another Amazon exclusive) stars in this collection of shorts following a group of outcasts who play a World of Warcraft-like game online and begin to meet in person with awkward and humorous results. You can sample them at www.watchtheguild.com.
Limited Edition Terminator 2 Complete Collector’s Set Endoskull [Blu-ray]
Six discs dedicated to one of the best Science Fiction movies of all time. However, the price is steep and almost all of the features have been previously available, so only buy this if you love the Endoskull case. Check out our interview with designer and visual effects coordinator Van Ling.
Russell Brand in New York City
After a quick burst of fame following Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Russell Brand follows up with a comedy special that will hopefully be better than his MTV hosting job.
Fist of the North Star: The Movie
This ultra-violent anime has been out of print for quite some time so be sure to snatch it up to replace the crappy VHS copy or bootleg you have on your shelf.
