Hot off the weekend of Star Trek’s rebirth we get more from the classic series and one of the best vengeance thrillers in years.
Pick of the Week
Taken (Two-Disc Extended Edition) (with Digital Copy)
Taken had the greatest trailer in recent history and thankfully it was followed up with a perfectly paced action thriller. The Two-Disc edition has a few nice features and an extended edition of the movie although I didn’t notice many differences from the theatrical edition. Check my review for more details.
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (Underworld Trilogy Pack Also Available)
Kate Beckensale had enough so they cast the underrated Rhona Mitra (Doomsday) to lace up the leather suit and fight vampires in a prequel involving the origins of the Vampire/Lycan conflict.
Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy
This has fifty uncensored animated shorts from the Creator of Family Guy and American Dad that are edgier (if you can imagine) than he is allowed to air on Fox.
S Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale
The direct-to-DVD sequel to Donnie Darko follows Donnie’s sister as she tries to fix time as her brother did before. Personally, I think they should have kept the premise but ditched the ludicrous idea that this bizarre occurrence would happen to the sister.
Passengers
Apparently, this movie got a soft release last fall so it wouldn’t interfere with Anne Hathaway’s Oscar buzz for Rachel Getting Married. That probably means it was lousy.
The Grudge 3
Straight to DVD the series continues as the curse terrorizes an apartment complex. They are also releasing the original The Grudge on Blu-ray with more features.
TV and Reissues
Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection [Blu-Ray]
This marks the first time the original movies will be on Blu-Ray and this set includes some new featurettes. The seventh disc has a roundtable discussion of the Star Trek universe featuring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, and Whoopi Goldberg as the moderator.
Two and a Half Men: The Complete Fifth Season
This is the season where they eclipsed the 100th episode so we get a featurette on that achievement as well as a feature on the much publicized crossover where they traded writers with CSI. Thankfully, they included the CSI episode they wrote in this set as well.
Galaxy Quest (Deluxe Edition)
With all the hype surrounding the relaunch of the Star Trek franchise it seems smart to touch up the greatest satire of the franchise as well. This edition includes six new features including one that includes Sigourney Weaver rapping which may not be a selling point.
The Dana Carvey Show
Only eight episodes of this sketch show were filmed, but it had a ton of talent involved including Steve Carell (The Office), Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report), Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation), and Robert Smigel (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog).
