Straczynski Returns Us To ‘Forbidden Planet’

Earlier this year, at both Emerald City ComiCon and San Diego Comic Con, J. Michael Straczynski hinted that he was scripting a remake of a classic sci-fi film that was near and dear to everyone in attendence.  I’ve speculated over the past few months as to what that film could be and one of my guesses was Forbidden Planet.  However, I dismissed that idea because, really, who would have the moxie to remake that film?  Apparently, Straczynski thinks he does and I think he does, too.  It’s sort of ironic in a  way.  A few years ago Straczynski and Bryce Zabel pitched Paramount an idea for a Star Trek TV reboot.  Forbidden Planet has been cited on numerous occasions by Gene Roddenberry as a major influence on the original Star Trek series.  How cool would it be to have a new Trek series in a few years that cites this remake as an inspiration?  Just desserts?  Delicious irony?  Am I babbling incoherently?  I think the last one is the most possible.  Anyway, my disdain for remakes aside, I am really interested in this one, but only because of the writer.  If they pick a director who wants to deviate greatly from the script, I’m not interested. Likewise, if Robbie the Robot is modernized or radically changed, then no thank you. And surely they are already figuring out a way to give Leslie Nielson at least a cameo? Anyway, stay tuned, as always we will bring you more info as we obtain it.
