Toy Fair 2011: Hasbro Says “Yo Joe!” In 2011

After nearly three decades, the G.I. JOE vs. COBRA battle rages on and legions of fans couldn’t be happier. When the fight between these two foes commenced in the early 1980’s – as G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO – it brought the world’s first action figure to life for a whole new generation of fans. To celebrate this milestone, Hasbro (NASDAQ: HAS) is introducing new and updated versions of many fan-favorite characters, vehicles, and play patterns from the past 30 years. Hasbro’s 2011 G.I. JOE line will include the re-launch of 12” A REAL AMERICAN HERO figures, re-imagined versions of classic 3.75” figures and vehicles, and new characters from “G.I. Joe Renegades,” the hit animated series that premiered on the Hub last Fall.

Hasbro invented the action figure category when it launched its G.I. JOE brand more than 45 years ago. The 2011 G.I. JOE line of action figures and vehicles lives up to that legacy with new sculpts showcasing favorite G.I. JOE and COBRA characters. Fans will love adding the new STORM SHADOW, FLINT, and SCARLETT figures, among many others, to their collections and kids will enjoy the characters from the “G.I. Joe: Renegades” program showing up in action figure form.

The brigade of 3.75” figures will have iconic vehicles to add to their arsenal, including a new version of the iconic H.I.S.S. tank and the SKYSTRIKER JET. The original SKYSTRIKER JET, released early in the G.I. JOE vs. COBRA series, has been at the top of fans’ wish lists since it was discontinued in the mid 1980’s. It will come with a 3.75” pilot to help navigate G.I. JOE through treacherous COBRA territory. Also, debuting is the BLACK DRAGON Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft taken directly from the new programming.

Firefighter. Police officer. National Guardsman. Marine. These are all actual real-life heroes and Hasbro knows how important real heroes are for kids of all ages. So to help honor the heroes we see and hear about every day, Hasbro has created the 12” A REAL AMERICAN HERO action figure assortment for its 2011 G.I. JOE line. Each figure will have the distinct look of G.I. JOE and will come with authentic gear and apparel to represent both military and civil forces.

The 12” line recruits one final figure to its 2011 ranks: the 12” U.S. Army Paratrooper. This figure will come equipped with a working parachute, gear insignia, and accessories.

UPDATE 1/11 – ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ Action Figure Images Leaked

UPDATE 1/11

A whole slew of amazing hi-res photos of Ransack and Depthcharge (both in robot and vehicle modes) have just been posted over at the-arker.com. Click on the images below for direct links to these galleries!

ORIGINAL STORY

Amid the fervor and speculation surrounding the unveiling of the Transformers 2 movie poster, a few additional images have found their way online. Thanks to the efforts of the guys over at tformers.com, fans can now begin clearing shelf space to in preparation for Hasbro’s upcoming action figure line from the film. Unofficial images have surfaced of Sideswipe (in robot and vehicle mode), Depthcharge (robot mode) and Ransack (robot mode).

It appears that, following the first movie, these ‘bots are going through a bit of an update. Ransack is known to fans as first being an Insecticon and later a F4U Corsair. In the Revenge of the Fallen line, his robot mode appears to be a WWI-style biplane.

Ransack

Depthcharge is a throwback to the ‘Beast Wars’ era and originally transformed into a robot manta ray. This time around, his vehicle mode appears to be a boat.

Depthcharge

Throughout his history in Transformers, Sideswipe’s vehicle mode has always been that of a sports car. This is unchanged in Revenge of the Fallen, as he appears to be a concept Corvette.

Review: G.I. Joe DVD Battle Pack

The G.I. Joe Battle Packs by Hasbro are nothing new to the collecting hobby. However, battle packs that include both a DVD and piece to a large Build-a-Cobra-Weapon… well, that’s a revolution. I say this with hyperbole of course, but Hasbro’s latest entry into their already-extensive and highly-popular 25th Anniversary G.I. Joe line may change the face of collecting. The sets, officially called ‘DVD Battles’ are literally one of the best action-figure deals on the market today.  How Hasbro’s team managed to produce and sell these sets at such a low cost baffles the mind. With such a high level of quality product at insane value, the ‘DVD Battles’ are certain to lock in new G.I. Joe collectors while still pleasing their already loyal fan base.

The first of the five collections already announced is the “M.A.S.S. Device.”  This set features two Joes, two Cobras, a horde of accessories, the console to the Build-a-M.A.S.S.-Device and a DVD containing an episode from the original G.I. Joe animated series. Currently, the set is selling from $20-$25 at most retailers, making it a pure steal.

What I mean by this is that unlike buying 2-3 single-carded figures, the M.A.S.S. Device DVD Battle Pack serves as a collection unto itself. The set include both heroes and villains, giving fans the opportunities for battles and starter-collections for each side of the ongoing battle of Real American Heroes. On top of this, the inclusion of the DVD will provide a bit of background on the M.A.S.S. Device. It’s a wonderful initial package to get kids and new collectors into the line or to revive the interest in dormant fans.

Of course, the sheer amount of the content would be meaningless if it’s quality was lacking.  Luckily, it’s all stellar. Each figure is a great selection for both old and new collectors.  The Baroness features a new sculpt and the other figures are unique repaints of previous releases. All are accurate to the characters as they appear in the miniseries, and their extra gear is fantastic. The additional accessories, such as the Baroness’ heavy water carrier, Snake Eyes’ crystal element and the cart with the elements (with the trooper) are all unique never-before released accessories.  The figures also include standard guns and blasters to boot. The only accessories missing from this set are handguns for Stalker and Snake Eyes’ unobtrusive holsters.  However, this is a minor qualm given all the other great stuff included.

The paint on each figure is crisp, with clean applications. Their bodies are highly articulated, each bearing the standard joint system for the 25th Anniversary line and offering a range of poses. The character selection, both individually and as a group, is really solid and gives buyers a wide selection.  With this set, you get a ninja, a standard evil trooper, a heroic green beret and a villainous, female officer. Though the Baroness is only featured in this specific suit for a total of two minutes in the cartoon, and as such kind of an odd inclusion, the figure is quite unique and features a cool sculpt. I was looking for problems with each of these figures but none hit me. I was just completely and totally satisfied with each piece from top to bottom. The M.A.S.S. console is a cool additional bonus, and even if one does want the entire device, this piece in particular could still serve as a nice addition to a display.

The DVD is fun, too. The introduction to the Joe team is a creative one with an easy-to-follow storyline.  Fans will love  cool moments involving a hand-glider chase, a run-in with a polar bear and scores of action by land, sea and air.

Frankly, I love this set. Even at $30, it would be a value; but I haven’t seen it for more than $25. If you can get it for $20, then it’s pretty much the most bang for your buck you’ll get from a toy purchase this year. Hasbro’s G.I. Joe brand-managing team have given fans a real gift in this set and I cannot wait to continue supporting this line by buying the additional releases as they hit in the months to come.

To prove this set’s incredible value, a brief breakdown is in order:

  • Average cost of a single carded Joe at most brick & mortar retailers: $6.99
  • Number of Joes contained in Battle Pack: 4
  • Cost of the included Joes, if individually carded: $27.96
  • Control Console
  • Mass Device elements on cart
  • DVD featuring original G.I. Joe cartoon
  • Value of Bonuses: Priceless (the concept of a Build-a-M.A.S.S.-device is too good to attach a price tag to).
  • Actual cost at most retailers: $19.99-$24.99
