Wendy & Lisa Garner Much Deserved Emmy Nomination

Wendy and Lisa’s Emmy is a long time coming as their scores for Carnivale and Heroes in particular have been truly original and musically amazing. We at Pop Culture Zoo are hoping that the duo wins the award they so richly deserve. Read the details below on the wide range of their film and TV compositions as well as info on the panel they will be taking part in at this year’s Comic-Con!

Musical composing duo, Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, commonly referred to as “Wendy and Lisa”, received their first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music for their work on Showtime’s NURSE JACKIE. In a widely male-dominated field, Wendy and Lisa are two of nine female nominees compared to over 140 male nominees in the category’s history dating back to 1988 when it debuted. Wendy and Lisa recently came off a busy season of scoring three different series: HEROES, MERCY, and NURSE JACKIE alongside the feature film JUST WRIGHT, an often unheard of workload in the composing world. Steven A. Kennedy of Film Score Monthly remarks “[Wendy and Lisa] are able to find ways to communicate humor, melancholy or sheer delight in the briefest of strokes.”

On Thursday July 22nd, Wendy and Lisa will be speaking on an anticipated new composer panel at Comic-Con in San Diego, Behind the Music: Composing for Sci-Fi, Horror and Fantasy Film & Television. The duo will appear along-side five of the most prolific composers in film & television, including fellow Emmy nominee Michael Giacchino (Lost), Nathan Barr (True Blood), 2008 Emmy-winner Jim Dooley (Pushing Daisies), John Ottman (X-Men 2), and Jeremy Zuckerman (Avatar: The Last Airbender). All of the scoring legends will discuss their respective past and current projects, how they got their big break into the music composing industry, and share some behind-the-scenes insights regarding composing for the specific sci-fi/fantasy genre of television and film, as pertinent to the Comic-Con audience and tradition.

Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman are based in Los Angeles. Following a career that started with Prince’s rock band, they have been composing for feature films and television since the 1995 box office hit Dangerous Minds. Their successful track record includes scoring the films Soul Food and Something New, and recently Just Wright, as well as the television series Crossing Jordan, Heroes and Mercy, in addition to Nurse Jackie.
