“Founder’s Day
A blast from the past could shake up Eureka’s future forever on “Founder’s Day” as James Callis joins the cast. Eureka‘s new season premieres Friday, July 9th at 9:00 PM on Syfy!
The third season of Eureka ended with some major events in the life of Sheriff Jack Carter. His daughter is finally going off to college and his girlfriend is taking a job in Australia. The good news is the end of the world had been averted and life would continue on Earth in general and Eureka in particular. The fourth season begins in the aftermath of those announcements amidst the town preparing for it’s Founder’s Day celebrations. Of course, this being Eureka, it isn’t long before things go horribly awry. Basically, five of our main characters (Jack, Allison, Jo, Fargo and Henry) find themselves back in time at the actually beginning of the town of Eureka and meet one of the founding fathers, Doctor Grant. Of course, since the town began as a high-security military camp you can imagine that strangers showing up does not go over well, plus there is the small matter of getting back to the present to deal with. Can Henry and Grant figure things out?
[Note: I have purposely hidden certain parts below that will be revealed after the episode has aired in order to avoid any major spoilers.]
This episode is difficult to talk about in advance because by the end of the episode life for all of our characters is altered in majorly significant ways. Due to some unknown reason, the ******* has been altered due to the trip to the past. **** has not left for ******** after all and is very involved with ****. Allison’s ******** *** ***** is, well, no longer ********. Zane, having ******** to ** at the beginning of the episode, is now even more of a ***** and can’t stand **. ***** is *******! And ****** ***** has somehow ******** to the *******. More ******* are revealed next week, but we’ll talk about those then. The creators of the show have come up with quite the conundrum as no matter how things are ultimately resolved there will be happiness and heartbreak. Did I mention we get the return of *****?!?
Even if that previous paragraph was awkward to read, you’ll thank me for being discreet once you’ve seen the episode for yourself. It is no small exaggeration to say that this may now be a new show and it’s no small feat for a series to re-invent itself going into the fourth year. The cast and crew all deserve a standing ovation for entertaining and surprising us beyond all expectations. There are too many television shows that find their formula, stick with it and rarely, if ever, challenge it. Eureka long ago made the unexpected part of the premise of the show, but the writers go above and beyond with what they do here. The only negative is that they have also made the one week wait between episodes nearly intolerable now. It really feels like we’re seeing the show for the first time and getting the opportunity to re-explore our beloved characters in a whole new way. I have no idea or even guesses as to how all this will play out, but I will be eagerly watching and trust that Team Eureka will surprise me in very unexpected ways. Innovative writing and wonderful acting make this a season premiere and series you should not miss.
