REVIEW: ‘Serenity: Float Out #1’

I have to admit that I would never have figured comedian/actor Patton Oswalt as a Firefly fan, much less as someone wanting to write a comic book. However, I can’t imagine a better written love-note to fans and epilogue to the film Serenity than Serenity: Float Out. Three old acquaintances of the erstwhile pilot of the Serenity gather to remember Hoban Washburne as they christen their newly purchased ship, which they have named Jetwash. Each of them recalls an encounter with wash that defines character as the person we, the fans, grew to love and miss terribly. Surprisingly, Oswalt has chosen not to use any of the main characters from the series, except for a cameo at the very end that provides a surprise that will have fans going crazy for the next Serenity story. The art by Patric Reynolds has a rough edge to it that is totally within the style of the Firely/Serenity ‘verse and he depicts some great facial expressions from Wash. Basically, for die-hard series fans and casual viewers alike, this is one book you definitely want to pick up. Joss Whedon could have written a great farewell to Wash, but Oswalt has written a perfect one and it both reminds us of what made a much-missed character great and gives us a sneak peek of what’s to come.
