Editor’s Note – Please welcome new contributing writer Ron Purtee. Ron is going to be looking at Marvel’s 2010 event ‘Siege’ for us. Please give Ron a warm welcome!
My name is Ron and I am going to lead you on your way through the 4 part Marvel event entitled Siege. This event has been in the works since “Avengers: Disassembled” which began back in 2004!
Fair Warning: There will be spoilers. So if you haven’t read the book yet, please avoid this until you have. Unless you are into that kinda thing, you naughty boy or girl you! Anyway, here we go with my review of..
SIEGE #1
To say right off the bat that the events in this book don’t mirror those of a lot of conspiracy theorists thoughts on what really happened on 9/11 is to do it a disservice. Norman orchestrated thousands of deaths at Solider Field and blamed it on poor Volstagg. He just wanted to be like Thor, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?
Norman sees this as an event so huge and catastrophic that his power supersedes that of the President (who looks a lot like Obama) and gathers up the Dark Avengers, tells them after this they are free to do what they want and heads on his merry way to Asgard. Oh, he brings along those Initiative guys too. All of them.
The siege begins with Sentry attacking Asgard, followed by an assault by Norman and crew. In Broxton, Oklahama, which Asgard floats over, Donald Blake sees this and tells Maria Hill to get a recuperating Tony Stark out of there and runs off to join in the melee as his alter-ego Thor. It doesn’t end well for the God of Thunder and all over the news outlets it is reported that the mighty Asgardian is down. All of this is being watched by a rather furious Steve Rogers. (Who apparently hangs out in his Cap outfit, eating pie and watching the news. Don’t ask me about it.)
The art by Oliver Coipel is stunning and the writing by Bendis is as fluid as ever. It is really great to see a giant event like this that has been in the works for years, and all the other things that we have had to go through, were for a reason.
Here are some things that you should pay attention to.
1. Ares told Norman if this attack isn’t on the up and up, he would cut his head off, “Armor and all”.
2. Can Norman really trust the Sentry completely? We have all seen how off kilter he really is.
3. What role will the X- Men play in all of this?
4. Don’t forget, Nick Fury and his Secret Warriors are still out there and running amok.
Could this seal the doom of Norman Osborn? Stay tuned to Pop Culture Zoo for further reviews of upcoming issues of Marvel’s SIEGE!
