According to Variety Sam Mendes (American Beauty) has been chosen to bring the comic book series Preacher to the big screen. Created by Garth Ennis (Writer) and Steve Dillon (Artist), Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a small-town preacher possessed by a supernatural being named Genesis. The possession resulted in the death of Custer’s entire congregation and the flattening of his church. Genesis is the result of an unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon and may have made Custer the most powerful being in all of creation. As a result, Custer embarks on a journey across the United States to literally look for God. He is accompanied by his girlfriend Tulip and and Irish vampire named Cassidy. How could you not want to read that and see a film made about it? The series ran for a total of seventy-five issues (sixty-six regular issues, five specials and a four-issue miniseries) and was published by DC Comics through their Vertigo imprint. I’m interested to see if Columbia Pictures condense the entire story down to one film or if they are thinking a franchise. Additionally, Columbia is also developing another Ennis comic book creation, The Boys as a film. As always, we’ll pass along more information as we get it, so stay tuned to PCZ!
