The BBC announced today that the Zygons will be returning to terrorize the Doctor, and viewers, once again for the 50th Anniversary Special Episode that is currently in production. The shape-shifting aliens first appeared in the 1975 serial “Terror of the Zygons” where they faced off against the fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith and UNIT. That story marked their only on-screen appearance to date, however they have been mentioned a couple of time in recent episodes and have menaced the eighth Doctor in several Big Finish audio plays as well as making appearances in a couple of novels. It is unknown at this time if they are the main villain of the upcoming story, but it is certainly an interesting choice for inclusion as they are a fan favorite in some circles yet not well-known. It is worth mentioning that they are shape-shifters and provided one explanation for the Loch Ness Monster by way of their large cyborg weapon called the Skarasen.
