Marillion have finally announced the title of their 17th studio album, along with a loosely projected release date and are now accepting pre-orders. Sounds That Can’t Be Made is expected to be released by September of this year, but you can secure your copy today. While expecting fans to purchase an album sight unheard months in advance of its release may sound unusual, Marillion have good reason to trust in their fans. In the late 1990s, after the band announced that they could not afford an expensive tour of North America. Their fans proved their loyalty by raising $60,000 and given it to the band to come play across the ocean. From this seed grew the idea for the band to actually ask the fans to fund their first album of the 21st century before they had even begun working on it. 12,000 copies of Anoraknophobia were pre-ordered with those that pre-paid by a specified date being rewarded with their names in the album’s liner notes. While 12,000 may seem like a small run for an album, all the money went straight to the band with no label or manager in the middle. Two out of the four subsequent have also been funded with a special pre-order campaign with dramatically increasing results and even more impressive deluxe editions. Now Marillion have once again asked their fans to put down money ahead of time with the resulting response prompting server overload for the Marillion store. We here at Pop Culture Zoo have pre-ordered our copy of Sounds That Can’t Be Made and will definitely review the album upon its release.
