“THE NEW GUY” AIRS MONDAY, JULY 11 AT 9:00 PM ON SYFY
At the end of last season, after having been betrayed by H. G. Wells (Jaime Murray), Myka (Joanne Kelly) decided she had had enough and quit the Warehouse, leaving Pete (Eddie McClintock), Artie (Saul Rubinek), Claudia (Allison Scagliotti) and Leena (Genelle Williams) to pick up the pieces. When we begin the show’s third season, Artie and Claudia are now field agents alongside Pete on a nearly disastrous artifact retrieval mission involving Jimi Hendrix’s guitar. Time for Mrs. Frederic (C. C. H. Pounder) to go recruiting. Enter ATF Agent Steve Jinks (Aaron Ashmore). Jinks has the ability to tell when someone is lying to him and is Pete’s new partner. Add to that an artifact that is creating some rather gruesome murders and you’ve got a typically askew Warehouse 13 season premiere!

Warehouse 13 is a tremendously fun show and a perfect companion to the equally quirky Eureka. Most of the fun derives from the exceptional chemistry between McClintock, Rubinek, Kelly and Scagliotti, but the wicked artifacts in the prologue and in the main story really amp things up here. Previous artifacts have been responsible for all sorts of malfeasance, but this one will literally, and literarily, kill you. It’s very fun seeing Artie and Claudia out in the field, if only for the lesson that they are both not up for doing that on a full-time basis. And there is a small appearance by a face from the past, lest we forget about them.
Of course, everyone wants to know what’s become of Myka. Publicity photos for this episode have already revealed that she makes an appearance, but far be it for me to spoil where she is and what her role is. I will tell you that Jinks doesn’t leave at the end of the episode and it looks like he’ll be around for the long haul. Speaking of the titular “new guy” I was really impressed by how readily he fit in with the group at the Warehouse. Of course Mrs. Frederic would pick someone that would match, but equally as impressive is the way Aaron Ashmore has the perfect acting sensibilities to be a great new counterpoint to McClintock. I am very interested to see how their partnership continues to play out. “The New Guy” is a great return for Warehouse 13 and a reminder of why it’s one of them most fun shows on TV.
