Terrific Storytelling Defines Trigger Men #2

I’ve made no secret of my love for Triptych Books’ series Trigger Men, as my review of the first issue makes clear. Mike Andersen and Heather Brinesh are back with issue two and they take the greatness they built on in the debut and elevate it even further. The second issue picks up where the first left off, with Matt and Jason attempting to pass off an old High School enemy as the man who killed one of their own targets. The problem is that their intended patsy is somewhat of an overweight, ineffectual slob so the pair attempt to get him into shape so that he could reasonably pass as a hitman when they finally kill him. The other problem is that the more time they spend with him the more they start to like him. However, that problem is resolved in a very geeky way and is rather perfect considering the format of Trigger Men. In the meantime, Matt has to deal with a family situation regarding his…or, rather, not deal with as it turns out. It all makes for a great read and, unfortunately for our hapless heroes, it appears all their efforts may be for naught as the closing pages show. Suffice it to say, Trigger Men is far from over.

Heather Brinesh’s artwork, inked by Matthew Hill, continues to be terrifically perfect for the story that Mike Andersen is telling and I hope the pair continue on this book for a long tie to come. Great stuff here and this is definitely a book you will read more than once, not only to get the full story, but to check out the artwork. This is certainly not a book to rush through so save it for when you can savor it. Additionally, it works really well reading the first issue over again and then diving right into this one. Like the first issue, this new installment is a terrific lesson on how to effectively tell a story, narratively, visually and emotionally. Well done to all. Now, when can we have issue three?
