SDCC2010: Sid & Marty Krofft, Joe Ruby and Ken Spears Panel

I am an unabashed child of 1970’s Saturday Morning cartoons and proud of it. A big part of that were shows produced by Sid and Marty Krofft. For me that meant Land of the Lost, The Krofft Supershow (especially the Kaptain Kool and Kongs segment), Far Out Space Nuts and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. These shows are very fondly remembered by me and the contributions that Sid and Marty, not to mention Joe Ruby and Ken Spears are immeasurable. Anybody born prior to 1970 probably thinks of all four of these guys as almost surrogate family members and should most definitely attend this panel next week at Comic-Con. Here are the details:

Sid and Marty Krofft changed Saturday mornings forever when the sibling puppeteers unleashed colorful characters like H.R. Pufnstuf and The Bugaloos on a generation of sugary-cereal-fueled kids growing up in the 1970s and ’80s. They will debut a brand new compilation DVD this fall, the first release in their exclusive new partnership with Vivendi Entertainment. As this upcoming release will celebrate the Kroffts’ past, the brothers are looking to the future with a new partnership with Ruby-Spears Productions, the legendary animation studio responsible for Scooby Doo. They are working together to bring to life numerous illustrations that iconic comic book artist Jack Kirby created for Ruby-Spears Productions in the ’80s.

Dave Itzkoff of The New York Times writes: “The characteristics of a Jack Kirby illustration are easily distinguished: extravagantly costumed heroes and nefarious villains locked in titanic struggles; foreshortened fists, feet and muscles that seem to pop off the page; intricately detailed settings meant to conjure the ancient past or suggest the distant future.” The Krofft brothers will appear for the first time together with Joe Ruby and Ken Spears at Comic-Con 2010 for an exclusive panel discussion called Behind the Scenes with Sid & Marty Krofft, Joe Ruby and Ken Spears: A Look at the Past, Present and Future. Join them for a look back at what they have achieved and then take a look to the future with their new partnership in Creations from the World of Jack Kirby. The panel will be moderated by producer Bonny Dore.

After the panel, Sid & Marty Krofft, Joe Ruby and Ken Spears will appear in Huckleberry’s booth # 4149 for a signing from 3:00-4:00 PM.
