Eddie Izzard Wins A…Sports Award?

Eddie Izzard, comedian, actor and self-proclaimed action transvestite, has just won the top award at the 2009 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. This may seem odd, except for the fact that earlier this year Izzard ran an incredible forty-three marathons around the UK, covering eleven hundred miles in just fifty-one days and, in doing so, raised over £200,000 for Sports Relief. Sports Relief was created in 2002 when the annual BBC Comic Relief charity drive teamed up with BBC Sports to create a new charity initiative with the aim of “helping poor and disadvantaged people turn their lives around – in the UK as well as the world’s poorest countries.”

Upon winning the award, Izzard stated to the crowd, “But I’m no athlete. Not like everybody here tonight. It was really tough. Everything was painful. People asked me if I enjoyed the running, but I enjoyed the stopping! I staggered, I ran and I crawled.”
