SDCC 09: Preview Night – And So It Begins

SDCC 2009 COVERAGE SPONSORED BY

Preview Night at this year’s San Diego Comic Con was a mixture of nostalgia and craziness all mixed up together. Nostalgia because once I was on the con floor it felt like it was just yesterday since last year’s con. Adding to that feeling was seeing a lot of the major booths all in the same place. The craziness reared it’s head with the sheer overwhelming amount of people that were there just for the Wednesday night preview. It really felt like the busiest day of the show and it was only three hours. The lines just to get badges were unprecedented, even for press and professionals. Speaking of lines, Twilight fans had already started to line up earlier in the day for the next day’s Twilight panel and they brought tents and sleeping bags to wait it out until the 1:00 PM panel. One of the big highlights was Seth Rogan unveiling the actual Green Hornet mobile and we should have some photos for you soon.

Preview Night does not end after the convention center closes for the evening, oh no. Almost as noteworthy as the celebrity-filled panels throughout the week are the after hours parties. There was no party love for Pop Culture Zoo last year, but I managed to start things off fairly well this year. First, I met Curt Wagner of RedEye’s Show Patrol fame as well as Jason of TVaholic.com and his two co-hosts of TV Times Three Podcast for some relaxing drinks at the Hard Rock bar Float. Great way to kick back for some much needed relaxation before the madness of the rest of the week. After leaving there, I was summarily summoned by Mr. Brandon Jerwa to the main bar at the Hyatt for after-drinks drinks and met some fantastic people. My geek moment of the night was getting to say hello and shake hands with Rich Johnston, whom you should all know from Lying in the Gutters and Bleeding Cool.

So, yes, Comic-Con 2009 has begun in earnest. Tomorrow the panels and interviews commence and we should have some great things for you. Stay tuned!
