DVDs With Dean – Release Date June 23rd

This is another slow week for releases, however those of you with younger children may make out like a bandit with Inkheart, The Pink Panther 2, and a Tom and Jerry Collection.

Pick of the Week
Pink Panther 2
What? Yeah it you can believe it Pink Panther 2 is the pick of the week. This wasn’t a strong release week which certainly helps but I got a review copy and was surprised by my enjoyment. Check out my detailed review.

Inkheart
Sometimes a family adventure film comes out and I wish I had a kid to watch it with, I have heard this is a great family film and though the fairy tales coming to life angle is getting played to death it manages to pull it off. The Blu-ray is a combo pack similar to the recent Disney releases with a standard DVD copy and a Digital copy as well as an extra featurette of the cast telling a story.

Confessions of a Shopaholic
The sad trend of giving all the features to the Blu-ray continues. All the fashion related features for those interested aren’t on the DVD, but at least both types can come with a digital copy. I am keeping an eye on it but it looks like the movies targeting women are the most hit by the “Blu-ray only” issue which is odd since it is usually men calling for a bigger-badder movie experience. Or at least in my experience.

Waltz With Bashir
Waltz with Bashir was a foreign language favorite during awards season last year which nabbed a Golden Globe but lost the Academy Award. It is a unique animated film about the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 as constructed from interviews with veterans. The features explore the historical event further and also delve into the animation’s powerful style

Mr. Troop Mom
George Lopez follows up his mysteriously canceled popular show with a family comedy where he is a Girl Scout leader with the hilarious Jane Lynch. This is also available in a combo pack.

The Code
Morgan Freeman has been showing up in a lot of straight to DVD movies lately with high caliber talent (The Contract with John Cusack, Edison Force with Kevin Spacey and Justin Timberlake). This time he is tag teamed with Antonio Banderas as a veteran thief who tries to pull one last heist to pay off some old debts.

TV and Reissues
My Dinner with Andre (Criterion Collection)
This movie is almost exclusively for film nerds as it is just a conversation over dinner between Wallace Shawn (Vizzini from the The Princess Bride, inCONCEIVable!) and Andre Gregory a theater director about life in general.

Tom and Jerry: The Chuck Jones Collection
The Chuck Jones era of Tom and Jerry was not the strongest but for a collector this is thirty-four shorts that you will want to grab. The set also comes with two documentaries on Chuck Jones.

The Monster Squad: The Complete Collection
All you fans of the campy 80’s movie with the same name can calm down, this is a 70’s TV show where the Universal monsters come to life and regret their past sins and decide to fight crime.
