According to the latest in today’s Variety, that March release date for Watchmen may not be set in stone after all. The Christmas Eve ruling that Fox has the distribution rights to the film after all may hold the Warner Bros. production back indefinitely, especially if the trial beginning January 20th gets dragged out by neither side being willing to blink. It’s all pretty much speculation at this point, other than both sides taking defiant stances earlier today. I did hear a rumor that Alan Moore is claiming he’d previously hexed the film and that this roadblock is merely the outcome of that. It’s a shame, actually, as the footage so far looks really amazing and rather faithful to the source material. It would really be too bad if we were deprived our chance to judge the film by legal posturing. It may really come down to which studio has the bigger pocketbooks, but you would think they could sit down and settle this like adults. However things turn out, I wouldn’t go ahead and get the day off from work on March 6th just yet. Although, doesn’t it seem a bit lame that Fox waited until production wrapped to file a lawsuit? I mean, they surely must have the Internet at Fox and were well aware that Warners had plans to make the film and distribute it themselves, right? I say we should all go ahead and get a copy of Absolute Watchmen and plan on reading that on 03/06 instead. It’ll make Alan happy and show both studios that we won’t join in their reindeer games.
