As announced at spawn.com on Friday, and seemingly ignored by everyone, the new creative team for the Image Comics series Spawn will be as follows: Todd McFarlane as Creative Director (meaning he will plot and provide page layouts), Brian Holguin as writer and Whilce Portacio as artist. The trio takes over the book with October’s issue number 185 and while no details were given on the direction they plan to take the character, the group’s enthusiasm was very evident. “We’ve just been talking with everybody involved about what we can do to inspire the readers,” said McFarlane, with Portacio adding, “As the artist, I get to say, ‘Okay, let me grab all of this stuff that’s oozing out of your head, and let me see if I could make it visually pleasing.’ For me, that is artistic bliss.”
“It’s familiar, but it’s changed enough. It’s like going back to your home town after a couple of years – that store is no longer there, and this is moved over there.” – Writer Brian Holguin on returning to Spawn
McFarlane and Portacio will also be attending Wizard World Chicago on June 28th where McFarlane will host the Spawn panel, revealing the new creative team for the first time in public. The panel will be at 11:00 AM on the 28th, with tickets available at noon on the 27th on a first come, first served basis. Anyone want to take bets on how fast those tickets go? I’m actually kind of excited about this new creative change and may actually start reading the book for the first time in many, many years. Just the fact that McFarlane is doing even just the page layouts is pretty huge news. What do you all think of this news? Are you still reading Spawn and, if not, will this get you back on the book? Let us know what you think by sounding off here!
