Peter Capaldi IS The Doctor!

12thdoctor-01The BBC ended weeks of rampant speculation today when they announced that Peter Capaldi would be taking over control of the TARDIS when Matt Smith leaves the role in this year’s Christmas Special. Smith will also star alongside his predecessor, David Tennant, in a special episode celebrating 50 years of Doctor Who airing in November. Then, the eleventh Doctor will have one final adventure with current companion Clara (Jenna Coleman) before regenerating into Peter Capaldi on Christmas Day.

The reveal was made during an unprecedented live broadcast on BBC ONE that was simulcast to several other countries. Bernard Cribbins and former Doctor Peter Davison was on hand to offer advise to Capaldi, while Matt Smith had a video message for him. Showrunner Steven Moffat, former Doctor Colin Baker and many former companions also added to the speculation via pre-recorded video.

Here’s the official press release from the BBC:

Widely regarded as one of the biggest roles in British television, Capaldi will be the Twelfth Doctor and takes over from Matt Smith who leaves the show at Christmas.

Peter Capaldi says: “Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.”

With Steven’s writing and his talent I know we’ll be making an amazing show with an incredible incarnation of number 12. I can’t wait to start this new adventure!”

Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One says : “Peter Capaldi has all the genius and versatility needed to take on the mantel of the great Time Lord and make the role his own. He’ll bring his own particular wisdom, charisma and wit to the Twelfth Doctor and take the show into an exciting new era.”

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning says : “We started thinking Peter Capaldi might be the right person to take on this iconic part a few months ago. But it was only when he did a secret audition at Steven’s house under the cover of darkness that we knew we had our man. He’s an extraordinarily talented actor who can seemingly turn his hand to anything. We can’t wait to premiere his unique take on the Doctor on Christmas Day and we are sure he’s going to become one of the all-time classic Doctors.”

SDCC 2013: Chase Masterson, Brad Bell, Jane Espenson And NOH8 Try To End Bullying

Bullying is something that a lot of us can relate to and, lately, it seems to be a subject that has come into sharper focus during comic and sci-fi conventions. When I was a kid, bullying was just something that happened and was what some bad kids did. Even when I was beat-up, tied up with wire, gagged and left behind some bushes by neighborhood kids when I was very young, there were no consequences for the other kids other than a firm scolding. Which only made me a target for worse abuse. Thankfully, shortly after that I moved away. But my personal experience as the bullied was mild in comparison to what many others have to endure. Acts of unbelievable cruelty have driven some to take their own lives. It doesn’t have to be this way. Bullying is unacceptable and needs to end.

Chase Masterson is part of an anti-bullying initiative and has some wonderful human beings partnering with her to get the message out that bullying doesn’t need to be tolerated any longer. If you go to no other panels this week at SDCC, please make a point to be in Room 4 on Sunday at 4:00 PM for a life-changing discussion. Here are all the details about this amazing panel:
