Three episodes in and the new re-imaging of the classic TV series V is certainly holding its own. Updating the premise to the present day and including the current cultural fear regarding terrorists fits in well with the overall premise. The new characters are certainly compelling and there has been a great addition in having Visitors disguised as humans living amongst us for many years prior to the ships showing up in the premiere. Now, only four episodes in the show will be taking a break until March 2010. So, does this fourth episode end in a cliffhanger and leave you wanting more? Ya sure, you betcha and how!
The episode starts off where the previous one left off: Erica, Father Jack, Ryan and Georgie have teamed up as a human resistance group and a new move by the Visitors forces them into action; Erica’s son, Tyler, is hanging out with the Visitors behind his Mother’s back, but actually tries to talk to her about it before being sidelined by Erica’s call to arms; Joshua faces being exposed as the murderer of Dale and a Fifth Column member; and Chad continues to walk the razor’s edge between promoting the aliens and exposing their possibly ominous deeds, but his hand may just be forced. This is a pretty packed episode as far as action, plot development and moving the characters forward, but I’m not going to give you any spoilers here. Suffice to say that big things happen in the lives of the main characters with more than one finding themselves in peril in one form or another by episode’s end. Plus, there is a final scene reveal that will probably require you to pick your jaw up off of the floor.
Of course, the questions remains, is all of this enough to bring viewers back in three months time when the series resumes new episodes? There is certainly plenty in this episode to fuel speculation and debate over the next few weeks. Unfortunately, long hiatuses have routinely not done any favors for serialized dramas. On the plus side, V will be returning post-Olympics, when a lot of shows will have benched new episodes, plus it will be teamed with retiring veteran series Lost. Time will tell, but I will certainly be tuning in to see where things play out in the remaining nine episodes of the season. I hope all of you will join me.
