In 2001 Big Finish Productions enlisted Paul McGann to return to the role of the eighth Doctor in their series of Doctor Who audio plays. Six years later they spun the eighth incarnation off into his own range of seasons. Now they are bringing that range to a close and in a very spectacular fashion. Following up on last month’s Lucie Miller cliffhanger, To The Death continues the fight against another Dalek invasion of Earth. The official synopsis is:
“After a last, futile fight-back against the Daleks, Lucie, Susan and Alex are heading home to England in the desperate hope of saving the Doctor’s life. But the true, terrible nature of the Daleks’ plan is beginning to emerge and the Monk has blood on his hands. To defeat the Daleks, it can only be a struggle… to the death.”
That synopsis covers the basics, but doesn’t come close to all that happens. Big Finish is known for being very unpredictable and having cleverly written stories with lovely twists and turns. In that regard, To The Death doesn’t to disappoint. In fact, this is easily one of the strongest stories in the twelve years Big Finish have been producing Doctor Who stories. Nicholas Briggs writes and directs this story, as is fitting, and he does a superb job. It would be easy to let the proceedings get bogged down in all the loose ends that need to be tied up, not to mention the several past characters that are present here. But Briggs easily handles it all and instead provides a very emotional journey that gives a proper send off to this very popular range. The ending leaves you wondering what sort of man we will find the eighth Doctor when we assuredly meet him again.
To write any more about this adventure would really ruin the experience and all the surprises that await the listener. I urge you to pre-order this story immediately to insure this shows up in your mailbox/download queue as soon as it is available. Pre-order now and prepare yourself for the end. It has been prepared for, but you have not.
