BBC America announced today through Entertainment Weekly that the next series of Doctor Who will premiere in the US on Saturday, April 23. No word yet on the UK premiere, but it is expected either on that day or a week or two before. Matt Smith returns as the Doctor, accompanied by Karen Gillan as Amy Pond and Arthur Darvill as Rory Williams. Highlights for the upcoming series include the opening two episodes taking place in the US (with scenes filmed in Utah), the highly-anticipated return of Alex Kingston as the mysterious River Song, James Corden returning as Craig Owens, Mark Sheppard guest-starring and an episode written by Neil Gaiman. In a break with tradition (insofar as the new series) this batch of episodes will be broken up into two blocks with seven episodes airing this Spring and the remaining six episodes held back until sometime in the Autumn. The two mini-seasons are said to be linked by a game-changing cliffhanger at the end of episode seven. We at Pop Culture Zoo are very much looking forward to new Doctor Who!
