Hope Finds A “Resurgence” On The Next Stargate Universe *SPOILERS*

“RESURGENCE” Airs Tuesday, November 30 at 9:00 PM on Syfy

In the Stargate Universe mid-season finale, Rush (Robert Carlyle), Colonel Young (Louis Ferreira) and the team debate chasing a distant energy signature into an area outside of the course mapped out by Destiny. Rush wants to investigate but it’s a day’s journey FTL to get there and Park (Jennifer Spence), Eli (David Blue), Volker (Patrick Gilmore) and Brody (Peter Kelamis) question the wisdom of pursuing an energy signature so far off course from Destiny’s mission, not to mention the fact that the crew has had less than pleasant experiences with other alien life forms. What’s the source of this energy signature? Does the crew encounter more hostile aliens? The answers will surprise you!

I can’t believe we’re already half finished with the second season of Stargate Universe. It still feels like a fresh, new show to me. I think the serialized format with the perpetually continuing storyline make it feel like a lot less than thirty episodes. There is a sense that the twenty-nine previous episodes have all lead to this as the characters certainly needed to go through what they did in order to be able to face the challenges in this episode. I don’t think they would have been mentally prepared if they’d come across a spaceship graveyard within the first few hours of arriving on Destiny, for example. But derelict spacecraft are just the tip of the iceberg in this superb episode.

It is really nice to see the crew working together as a, well, crew. Although Young is definitely the leader, he is listening much more to the group of Rush, Eli, Park, Volker and Brody and all of them are working together much more harmoniously now that there is a purpose and a mission. Although, it must be said that not everyone is as sold on the mission as Rush and I’m wondering if there are future conflicts waiting to happen. One question that is left dangling about the Destiny’s mission is just what the folks back at Stargate Command think of it all. That’s not really been addressed and it would be cool to hear what, say, Carter, Jackson or even Dr. Lee think about it. But that just may be a little too fannish to come into play.

Interestingly, the first part of Stargate SG-1‘s first mid-season two-parter (season six’s “Prometheus”) was written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. Eight years later this week’s “Resurgence” is written by Joseph Mallozzi and part two, the as-yet unscheduled “Deliverance,” is courtesy of Paul Mullie. Ok, no one but me finds that cool, but there you are. Mallozzi and Mullie have collaborated on several significant episodes for this show and Mallozzi’s solo outing proves to be strong and possibly the biggest episode of the season thus far. There is a fair amount of tension, a goodly amount of space battle action, a look at the bigger universe surrounding our characters, a growing sense of hope and one surprising moment that will make you say “yeah!” out loud while pumping your fist in the air. Great stuff. Let’s hope Mullie is as strong solo with the second part.

Mid-season finales have been a staple of Stargate since the SG-1 made the move to Syfy (then SCI-FI) for its sixth season in 2002. For whatever reason the channel decided a few years ago to break up the seasons of their series into two parts with a substantial break in between. For the Stargate franchise that has typically meant a two part major story, with a respectable cliffhanger at the end of the first part. Stargate Universe is no exception this. Last year saw Rush being left behind on a planet. This year, the stakes are considerable higher as the entire crew and ship are left in peril. Typically, it’s been a four month break before the season resumes and I see no reason to expect otherwise this time, but you’ll be really hoping it’s much sooner than that at the end of “Resurgence.”

And don’t take my word for how great this episode is. My pal, Curt Wagner, over at Show Patrol has a few words about “Resurgence” as well!
